Supporting You Through Motherhood
I’m Amy Emmerson, I’m a Mum and a psychotherapist.
The process of becoming a mother is a different experience for every woman. You may be doing it on your own, or with a partner, you may have adopted your child or undergone miscarriages or extensive IVF treatment.
Whichever way you come to be a mum there can be a lot of pressure to mother the “right way” whether it’s birthing, feeding, or sleep routines, all this noise can be overwhelming. If you feel overwhelmed by unexpected feelings in motherhood then you are not alone. I’ve been there too—those sleepless nights, the anxieties, fears and isolation jostling around whilst you get to grips with taking care of your baby.
There is so much preparation and support for birth, but so little support for you when your baby arrives. I love the concept of the “fourth trimester” that is, the first 12 weeks of your babies life. A time of great physical and emotional change, as your baby adjusts to being outside the womb, and you adjust to your new life as a parent. Modern life doesn’t always acknowledge this liminal space but in therapy we can explore and process your birth experience, what motherhood is like for you, how you can maintain your you-ness and get your needs met as a mum.
