Recommended Reads for New Mums

In those early days postpartum there’s a lot of feeding, cuddling, and nap times when many of us pick up our phone or tv remote to pass the time.

But if you fancy a bit of a break from screens here’s some books (audio options available too!) that we think are just brilliant!

MATRESCENCE

Lucy Jones

Jones’s book is a radical new examination of how motherhood changes both the mind and body. It articulates beautifully the monumental shifts motherhood can bring.

Part educational, part memoir, it neatly weaves the personal and political aspects of modern motherhood.

BEAUTIFUL CHAOS

Jessica Urlichs

Through a series of poems Urlichs reminds us that the everyday ordinary of motherhood can actually be extraordinary.

If you’re looking for a comforting warm hug of a read then this is the one for you.

My Child and Other Mistakes

Ellie Taylor

Laugh out loud funny, Ellie writes candidly about her own personal experience of becoming a mum, exploring the decision to have a baby when she doesn't even like them…

Great for when you want something relatable but also lighthearted.

A LIFE’S WORK

Rachel Cusk

A moving, brutally honest account of early experiences of motherhood.

You’ll definitely laugh and probably cry too.

I Am Not Your Baby Mother

Candice Brathwaite

Part-memoir, part-manifesto about black motherhood, Candice writes with real passion.

It’s a thought provoking and heartfelt read.

MIND OVER MOTHER

Anna Mathur

This one for the mums who struggle with anxious thoughts and need a helping hand.

Written by a psychotherapist (and now influencer), this is a deep dive into anxiety with explanations and practical tips.

WHY DID NO ONE TELL ME?

Emma Brockwell

A really important read about the PHYSICAL aspects of being a mother.

It covers topics that we still don’t feel comfortable talking about, encouraging you to take control and care for your changing body.

There are so many more we could add to this list!

Have you read any of these?
